Pope Francis has appointed Curtis Martin, the founder of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), as an adviser on New Evangelization.
"I'm extremely grateful to the Holy Father for this incredible opportunity to serve the global Church in this new appointment," Martin said.
The official title of the position is Consultor for the Section for the Fundamental Questions of Evangelization in the World of the Dicastery for Evangelization, a press release from FOCUS said. Its members include Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of the Archdiocese of New York. Martin is one of 15 regional consultors named by the Pope.
In this role, Martin will offer advice and proposals on how to address obstacles to the New Evangelization, encompassing concerns regarding politics, society, and other factors that may affect the Catholic Church's worldwide outreach and mission to form disciples.
The New Evangelization "calls all Catholics to be evangelized and then go forth to evangelize. In a special way, the New Evangelization is focused on 're-proposing' the Gospel to those who have experienced a crisis of faith," a page at the website of the United State Conference of Catholic Bishops says.
FOCUS is a Catholic organization founded in 1998 that focuses on fostering meaningful connections with college and university students and sharing the uplifting message of the Gospel.
"We need to be praying for the universal needs of the Church, including the very specific ones that we’re being asked to address, on a day-to-day basis," Martin said.
FOCUS missionaries form personal relationships with students and provide support and advice on Church doctrine, faith, and other topics to encourage a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. With initiatives such as Bible studies, outreach programs, discipleship, mission trips, and other endeavors, FOCUS aims to inspire and strengthen students' faith.
"I am honored, and I look forward to learning from others in the Dicastery for Evangelization while sharing the experience FOCUS has gained through 25 years of evangelization outreach," Martin said.
