The Archdiocese of Milwaukee announced Monday that its Chrism Mass this year will not be open to the public but will be livestreamed for those who want to watch.

“In observance of social distancing, this year's Chrism Mass is by invitation only,” the archdiocese said on social media. “However, you can tune in to this beautiful Mass by visiting the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist’s YouTube and Vimeo channels.”

The week between Palm Sunday and Easter is known as Holy Week, Britannica says. This year, it runs from April 10-16. During Holy Week, Catholics commemorate Judas' betrayal of Jesus, the institution of the Eucharist, Jesus' Passion and crucifixion, his burial and his Resurrection.

The Chrism Mass is also traditionally celebrated during Holy Week, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). During this Mass, the priest consecrates three oils: the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of the Catechumens, and the Chrism.

Each of the oils has a special purpose and they are used accordingly throughout the year, according to Simply Catholic. It then provided a brief description of each, as follows:

The Oil of the Sick is used in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. During this sacrament, a priest lays hands on a sick or elderly person, prays for him, and anoints him with oil on his head and hands.

The Oil of the Catechumens is used to anoint both children and adults before their baptism.

Chrism oil is used to consecrate someone to God, such as during the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Every year, bishops across the country celebrate a Chrism Mass, at which they consecrate enough of each of the three oils for every church in their diocese to use for the year.

“Please join us in spirit by watching our livestream to see the blessing of sacred oils and to hear incredible music and wonderful scripture. Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/sjcathedralmke YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrw_JySXFU94eYPgE_ILokQ," the archdiocese said online.
