Church of the Resurrection issued the following announcement on Oct. 25
Revelation 7:2-4,9-14; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12a
This solemnity bumps the usual Sunday commemoration this year in lifting up the historic saints we know and acknowledging that there are many unrecognized “holy ones” who stand at the throne of God. The early Church instinctively honored the martyrs as saints, and in time came to see the other categories of women and men who had followed other ways to sanctity. Today’s readings tell us about that holy road to God. The passage from the First Letter of John proclaims that we already have a foretaste of holiness. The reading from Revelation suggests that no race is excluded. The familiar Gospel passage (the Beatitudes) speaks of the surprising characteristics of the saints—quite the reverse of “getting ahead” in the world. Could you name the main virtues you need to become a modern-day saint?
