Jesus tells us that political involvement is not wrong so long as it does not go against God's plan, Fr. Patrick McConnell said in the Oct. 18 bulletin for the Catholic Communities of Holy Rosary and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
"In the current political environment, it is hard not to be aware of the social issues that are facing our world today. It might even be tempting to avoid or ignore them because there is much conflict that follows them. However, it is clear through Christ and our Church that it is not acceptable to ignore the current issues that face our government, our society and our homes," McConnell said in the bulletin.
Voters in the U.S. are asked to participate in political life for the common good. The church understands this need, Pope Francis has said, McConnell wrote.
"The church recognizes the need to be formed in this area of holiness and has provided a document that outlines much of what is necessary to be properly formed in our involvement as faithful citizens in our country," McConnell said in the bulletin.
The document can be found here.
"In this document the United States Council of Catholic Bishops recognize that every Catholic must be properly informed on the current issues of the day and what is the Church’s, therefore Christ’s view on them. The Church begs us to inform our Conscience so that when we make a choice it is done fully aware of what is right and wrong in our current environment," McConnell said in the bulletin.
