St. Bernadette Parish in Appleton, Wisconsin urges parishioners to focus on family and to make sure you're growing your faith together, according to a church bulletin for the parish.
"Faith Formation has often been thought of as a ministry for children — we formally teach our kids about the Catholic faith until they make their Confirmation and then they no longer come to classes," Gina Holt, the team leader for youth programs and family catechesis for the church, wrote in the bulletin. "Oftentimes, that translates into adults who have not studied their faith since they were in school, and yet we have this expectation that parents will pass on that faith and answer the evolving church questions of their children."
Holt wrote that while parents typically do a good job to enroll their children in programs that help teach them about their faith, it's tough when the children have questions about the Bible or the saints that parents aren't prepared to answer because they don't have that knowledge.
"This is something I have experienced in my own home, and I think we can agree it is not an uncommon occurrence," Holt wrote.
However, Holt wants to change that narrative and so does the Family Ministry Team at both Sacred Heart and St. Bernadette parishes.
"We surveyed parents last year to ask what they wish they knew more about as adult Catholics, and we have been making efforts to use those results to educate and empower our parish parents," Holt wrote. "Using the curriculum A Family of Faith, we have monthly parent gatherings (virtual now, but with the goal to meet in-person) that explain topics of faith the children are learning in Faith Formation."
Holt wrote that this year, the program's goal is to walk through the Apostles Creed with both youth and their families.
"As we learn and pray as an adult community, our families grow closer to one another and closer to Jesus," Holt wrote.
