St James The Less Parish recently issued the following announcement.
Last Sunday we heard the Gospel reading, Matthew 16: 13 -20, of Jesus asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” In Lectio Peter Session 4 "Peter the Rock: The Primacy of Jesus" we learn that when Jesus asked this He and the disciples were in Caesarea Philippi. They were standing at the base of a large rock cliff facing a temple that had been erected to Caesar Augustus. Caesar Augustus had his father, Julius, declared to be a "god" thus Caesar Augustus was to be worshiped as the "son of god". Peter, looking at that earthly temple declared to Jesus that He was the “Son of the living God”. Whereas Caesar Augustus was the son of a dead god, Jesus was the son of the one true LIVING God. This was a very bold statement to make and could have cost Peter his life if a Roman soldier was to overhear him. It also is the question Peter was to answer for the rest of his life, would Peter worship the earthly gods or would he worship the one true God?
Join us for great lessons such as this as we offer Lectio Peter this fall.
Classes begin the week of Sept 21 and will go through the week of Nov. 23.
