St. Augustine Catholic Church in Wausaukee has resumed in-person Holy Masses after shutting them down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The church has numerous safety precautions in place, the Rev. Francis Nusi said in an interview with the Wisconsin Catholic Tribune. Those include taking temperatures of parishioners at the entrance of the church, closing some of the pews to maintain distance between worshippers, distributing communion with masks on, and no singing, Nusi said.

“We are following the rules of the state and Diocese,” he said. ”So far, it’s going well, but with less participation.”

The church offers Holy Mass on Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. Wisconsin is calling its statewide COVID-19 reopening plan “Badger Bounceback.”

“Wisconsin has successfully flattened the curve and kept our health care system from exceeding capacity by staying at home and following best public health practices like physical distancing and frequent hand washing,” the state said on its website. “In fact, Wisconsin has maintained nearly the lowest rate of COVID-19 cases in the Great Lakes region of the country.”

Wisconsin has suffered 826 deaths from COVID-19, and 77.2% of the patients have recovered, according to state statistics. The Green Bay Diocese has reopened parishes in all 16 counties it serves, according to its website.

“The diocese is reconnecting to inspire in a phased way, always keeping in mind the health and safety of those in our parishes, schools and communities,” the Diocese website said. “We will continue to balance bold faith and prudent safety, monitor data and provide measured responses, encourage collaboration between our diocesan monitoring team and local pastor/pastoral leader and continue to follow the process of a phased approach to ministry.”

The diocese allowed in-person Masses to resume as of June 14 at maximum 25% occupancy as long as other safety protocols are followed.

Marinette County, where St. Augustine is located, is rated by the state as having a “moderately high” level of COVID-19 cases.
