St. Mary of the Hill Parish in Hubertus recently announced that the church has resumed holding in-person Masses.
Parish secretary Mary Whelan says that attendance has been down since restarting and that the church has made many changes to accommodate social-distancing mandates to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Facemasks must be properly worn," Whelan said in an interview with Wisconsin Catholic Tribune. "Sanitize your hands when you enter and leave. Chairs are spaced six feet apart."
Whelan says that the priest now brings holy communion to the parishioners and the ushers help with dismissing people to keep proper distancing.
"The building is being sanitized after each Mass," she said. "Ushers open doors when people arrive and leave. Signs have been posted and if you are not feeling well, please do not attend Mass."
Wisconsin's reopening plan — called Badger Bounce Back — is a phased-in process to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 while safely reopening the state. Badger Bounce Back includes staying safe at home, allowing access to more testing, expanding contact tracing, tracking the spread aggressively, allowing access to more personal protective equipment (PPE) and increasing health system capacity, the plan states.
The plan states that once Wisconsinites have more flexibility involving interactions, more residents can get back to work and people can be aggressively tested for the coronavirus so that people who are infected can be properly isolated and quarantined, along with their close contacts. The plan also notes that this is how the state will shift from "boxing in" people to boxing in the virus.
Masses are being held on Saturdays at 4 p.m., and Sundays at 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
