All Saints Catholic Church in Milwaukee recently posted a reflection about God’s Kingdom on its Facebook page, written by Fessahaye Mebrahtu.

The U.S. Declaration of Independence, as well as the Constitution, created a new political system unlike former regimes, Mebrahtu wrote.

“The European political system became the standard of governance for the rest of the world,” he said. “However, the proliferation of European-style political systems – left or right – did not bring about peace to the rest of the world.”

These other political systems were destabilizing and did not accomplish the goal which they set out to do, Mebrahtu continued.

In the Old Testament, the prophet Zachariah shared the news that there was to be peace in Jerusalem. Even though the city was surrounded by threats and constantly engaged in conflicts, there would one day be peace over the whole earth.

“Jesus assured his disciples that the peace he gives is different from what the world calls peace,” Mebrahtu wrote. “The worldly peace expressed in the absence of war that does not respect individual liberty and conscience. Inner peace comes from the Holy Spirit and is expressed and witnessed in our daily living.”

True peace comes when we partner with Jesus and take His yoke upon us, relying on His relationship with us, rather than depending on human reason and skills that create divisions, exclusivity and disunity.

“Such exclusive association is often at the expense of those who cannot defend themselves or voice their needs and sufferings,” Mebrahtu wrote. “Humility and inclusivity is foundational to God’s wisdom in the words of the Psalmist, ‘The Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.’”

Unlike the empty promises of new world orders, God’s promise results in peace, freedom and complete acceptance for every individual, whatever nation they may be in.
