Readings for the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (July 5)
(Zechariah 9:9-10, 14-16a; Romans 8:9,11-13; Matthew 11:25-30)
Chapter 11 of Matthew’s Gospel offers a series of moments where Jesus seems to be hitting a wall. First, John the Baptist shows some frustration at Jesus who hasn’t proven to be the Messiah he (John) had expected. Jesus then describes his generation as whiny, hard to please children, and goes on to vent about three towns that witnessed a good share of his ministry but have shown no signs of repentance. At this point he turns to his disciples—not very impressive or educated (“little ones” he calls them)—and praises God for their having welcomed his truth. What qualities do “little ones” possess that allow them to see and receive God’s revelations in ways that the “wise and the learned” resist? How many of these qualities do you have?
