Fr. John Clote of the Basilica of Saint Josaphat in Milwaukee is relocating to Arizona after accepting a new position with the Diocese of Phoenix.
Clote broke the news to parishioners in a letter that begins, “Dear Parish Family.” The letter bids farewell and thanks the people of faith whom Clote served with the help of his superiors and by following the will of the Holy Spirit.
Clote has served the parish for two years and helped to support the community through various ups and downs. He asked to be remembered in the daily prayers of parishioners.

Clote worked in Phoenix for five years in the 1990s. Phoenix is where he was “first consecrated to the Blessed Mother,” according to his letter.
Clote shared the story of meeting Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix when Clote was part of a young adult prayer group. The bishop spoke about the church’s need for healing as well as the New Evangelization.
Bishop Olmsted offered Clote an opportunity to join the parish and its initiative. After thoughtful prayer, Clote agreed to accept the responsibility.
Clote referred to the Basilica of Saint Josaphat as a “true gem within the Franciscan Order and the Universal Church.”
He ended the letter by reassuring parishioners that they are in his constant prayers. Members of the church who want to stay in contact with Clote can find his address posted in the next bulletin.
His final mass date is yet to be announced. It will include a “sending ceremony” before his departure.
